Swim for Life Programs

Take this perfect opportunity for you and your children to experience water fun and safety together. Our well-trained instructors teach swimming and water safety skills to preschoolers with fun games, songs and mascots. Watch your children’s eyes light up as they learn new skills and are rewarded for their accomplishments. 8 levels for children 4 months to 6 years of age.

Lifesaving's Advance Programs

Some people cannot get enough of the water. They are passionate about swimming and want to take their training to a higher level or pursue a career as a lifeguard or swim instructor. Course online registration opens May 1, 2022

Rookie Patrol

Develops individual fitness levels to meet a timed 100m swim and 350m workout. Water proficiency skills include: swims with clothes, ready position, foot-first and head-first surface dives. Demonstrating an ability to conduct a primary assessment and initiating EMS are included as first aid skills. Victim recognition and throwing assists are other key elements of the program.

Ranger Patrol

Enhances capability in the water, including stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 200m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues.

Star Patrol

An excellent preparation for the Bronze Star award, Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke (100m each); and complete 600m workouts and for 300m timed swims.

Bronze Star

The Lifesaving Society’s Bronze Star develops swimming proficiency, lifesaving skill, and personal fitness. Candidates refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.

Bronze Cross & Medallion

Junior Lifeguard Camp teaches lifesavers how to respond in complex water rescue situations, and develops physical fitness, decision-making, and judgment skills. Sussesful particapants will receive Intermidate First Aid, CPR C & AED along with certification in Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross, this is prerequisite for all advanced life saving awards such as National Lifeguard Service certification..

40 hours

Bronze Medallion teaches lifesavers how to respond in complex water rescue situations, and develops physical fitness, decision-making, and judgment skills. Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced life saving awards such as National Lifeguard Service certification. All candidates are required to have a current Canadian Lifesaving Manual. Manuals are included in cost.

Prerequisite: 13 years old,

Swim Instructor

Swim Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life® and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. Lifesaving Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs. This combined Swim Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor course prepares Instructors to apply the Lifesaving Societies level 1 leadership competencies and strategies while teaching and evaluating.

Shallow Water Attendant

Candidates will learn how to effectively communicate and educate the public about safe, appropriate use of amenities, and how to respond to minor emergencies as part of a team working with the leadership of a current National Lifeguard and under the guidance of a supervisor 18 years old (or older). Under the direction and leadership of a current National lifeguard, candidates can assist in attending to waterslide landing areas, lazy rivers, and other areas where the water is less than 1.2m deep.

Prerequisite(s): 13 years of age and current Aquatic Emergency Care OR 13 years of age, Bronze Cross (need not be current), and current AB workplace approved Emergency First Aid.

Private Swim Lessons are geared to swimmers of all ages and abilities who are looking for individual attention to improve their swimming ability, stroke efficiency and endurance. Swimming lessons are in 20 minute blocks. A 2nd or 3rd individual may share the lesson time, if at the same swim level.

Vulcan Pool is a multi-use facility, space will be shared with other users. Missed classes cannot be made up due to schedule constraints.

Accessibility

The entries to the building and pool area are all at ground level for greater accessiblity. The change rooms at the Vulcan Swimming Pool can be accessed by all patrons of the pool. We have add wheel chair accessible change stall and washroom stalls

The new pool also has zero entrance access which connects to the lane pool allow acess for all swimmers. also enjoy our raised Hot Tub that allows for access from a wheelchair into the tub.

For all pool users, Pool staff will admit users to any Family, Public, or Parent & Tot swim at 5 minutes before the scheduled start time. This ensures the protection and safety of all pool users by:

allowing previous pool users to leave the facility in a safe and timely manner
allowing current users to enter the change rooms with ease
allowing for the appropriate amount of time for patrons to change and enter the pool without waiting

Preventing Theft & Protecting Valuables

The Vulcan Recreation wants to remind all users about preventing theft in the change rooms. Individual locker doors and/or locks can be tampered with or forced, so here are a few tips to help you protect valuables.

Leave valuables at home whenever possible
Lock up personal effects and valuables every time
Report suspicious behaviour to any staff member

Rules

General Rules & Guidelines

When you visit us at the pool, there are a few things to keep in mind. Please help us to maintain a healthy, clean swimming pool!

Street shoes and strollers/wagons are not permitted in locker rooms or on the pool deck. Shoes can be stored in lockers and strollers/wagons in viewing area.
No outside food allowed. Food and drink is avaialable in disinated arena.
No outside pool toys allowed. Pool toys available from lifeguards
Use the washroom and have a head-to-toe shower before entering the pool.
Take children on lots of “bathroom breaks” during your swim. Waiting to hear “I have to go” may mean that it is too late!
Remove children’s swim diapers in the change room only.
Ensure that children under the age of 8 years are within arm’s reach of parents or caregivers over the age of 14.
Please note children under 10 must be accompanied in the hot tub by a caregiver over the age of 16.
Respect the health and safety of others. Do not use the pool if you have an open wound, a communicable disease or virus, diarrhea or have been ill within the last two weeks.
Please notify the ifeguards if a fecal or vomit contamination has occurred. Our staff has a series of procedures to deal with the contamination, to ensure the safety of all swimmers.
The use of photographic equipment (including camera cell phones) in the changing rooms is strictly prohibited. If you see anyone taking pictures in the change room, please report them to aquatic or client services staff immediately.
